Every glass of milk helps contribute jobs, income and vitality to hundreds of communities across the nation. From the multi-generation dairy farm families, to the companies that process milk and produce other nutritious dairy products, to the neighborhood grocer, dairy farmers and dairy companies don't stand alone they actively support and strengthen local and national economies.

Dairy businesses contribute as employers, purchasers of supplies from local companies, supporters of community civic and charity groups and more. In fact, in 2011, on-farm cash receipts from milk produced on Idaho farms amounted to $2,446 billion dollars ranking it as the largest single sector in the state's agriculture industry.

Dairy products also contribute to communities by offering high nutrition and economic value, helping Americans get the nutrients they need in an easy and affordable way. For example, milk, at about 25 cents per glass, is a nutritional bargain. Few foods deliver dairy's powerhouse of nutrients while being affordable, appealing and readily available. Dairy products are by far the lowest cost food source of calcium and among the lowest cost sources of riboflavin and vitamin B12.

And, dairy products can help feed communities and the world, nourishing individuals so they can be healthy and active in communities. Dairy foods are major sources of essential nutrients in the diet of Americans, and higher dairy intake translates to better bone health and lower chronic disease risk. In fact, increasing to three to four daily servings of milk and milk products could save more than $214 billion in health care costs over five years.

Ultimately, dairy farms, dairy food companies and retailers are committed to be good neighbors in the communities in which they live and work. The production of wholesome dairy products delivers economic benefits and contributes immeasurably to healthy communities across the country.
