Wednesday night in a frustrating game, Ajo fell to Bourgade Catholic. Friday they staged a comeback win over San Pasqual. Bourgade Catholic 52, Ajo 35

There's a saying in basketball: "Some nights you can't buy a basket even if you're a billionaire." That was true for the Red Raiders Wednesday. Bourgade featured a tall team (including a 6' 4" center) with decent skill.but certainly not one of the Valley powerhouses. The Raiders played intense man defense. They showed fire, ran the fast break, and went to the basket at every chance. The problem was the ball would not drop. Each of Ajo's sharpshooters, was off as shots rattled, swirled, dipped in and popped out.

At the end of the l" hall Bourgade led 22-15. The 3rd quarter was played at breakneck speed as Bourgade outscored the Raiders 21-10 stretching their lead. Ajo outscored them in the 4th but couldn't close the gap.

The game was perhaps a measure of Ajo's improvement. Even when everything was off they kept up the pressure. Jacob Lewis fighting in the paint against much taller forwards led the team with 10 points. Josiah Nez' normally sweet three-pointer wouldn't drop as he finished with seven. Armando Herrera repeatedly driving to the basket scored eight. Ajo went 6 of 13 from the line. Perhaps the most exciting moment came as freshman Justice French put back a rebound just as the final buzzer sounded scoring his first ever varsity points.

Ajo 61, San Pasqual 57

The Raiders made the long trip to play the Warriors and posted their season high score. They needed every point as the two teams fought back and forth with multiple lead changes, comebacks, and a nail-biting finish. Ajo jumped out fast leading 16-7 at the end of the 1st. The Warriors woke up and poured in a remarkable 24 points. The game was tied 31-all at halftime.

San Pasqual came out hot after the break clamping down on the Raider offense taking a 10-point lead at end of the 3rd. Devon Rendon, Lewis, and Nez all got hot in the 4th running up an eight point lead. The Raiders then withstood a furious Warrior rally holding on for the victory.

Rendon led all scorers with 22 points. Lewis had 12 including 4 for 4 from the line. Nez had 11, and Roberto Macias played a steady game scoring eight.
