Ever improving sophomore pitcher Jacob Lewis came within a walk of a perfect game against Arizona Charter Academy. Ajo 11, ACA0

The Academy Bulldogs came into Friday's game tied with Ajo. They had played some tough teams. None of that mattered on a windy, spring day as Lewis handcuffed the AC A lineup notching 12 strikeouts and a walk. Lewis faced 16 batters in the 5-inning game.

ACA opened with two strikeouts, a walk, and a picture perfect Josiah Nez at short grabbing a grounder and firing to Armando Herrera at 1st to retire the side. The 2nd and 3rd were all Lewis as he struck out six straight.

On offense the Raiders scored four in the 1st. Devon Rendon singled, stole 2nd, reached 3rd on a balk, and came home when ACA played a hard Lewis grounder for the out at 1st. Nez singled, Herrera walked, and both advanced on a passed ball. Nez came home on a wild pitch, and Roberto Macias hit an RBI single to score Herrera. Macias scored on two steals and a wild pitch.

Ajo was quiet in the 2nd as a new pitcher struck out the bottom of the order. The 3rd opened with Martin Alvarez reaching on catcher interference. Miguel Betancourt scored him on a beautiful triple. Justice French singled him in, made 2nd on error coming home on a Julian Almeida double. Almeida promptly stole 3rd and slid home on a wild pitch.

Rendon then walked and stole 2nd. Lewis scored him on an in-the-park homerun just beating the throw. As he hung to the dugout someone wisecracked, "Didn't know you could run that fast." Between pants he replied, "Neither did I."

Nez reached on error, made 3rd on a Herrera single coming home on a passed ball. ACA finally got out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts.

The 4th demonstrated that no matter how well a pitcher throws, he or she is only as good as the defense behind them. Herrera had a beautiful catch of a foul ball against the fence. Erick Gomez-Lopez made a running grab in center field to retire the side. Ajo went down in three in the bottom of the inning.

The 5th opened with ACA needing two runs to keep the game alive. It wasn'.t happening as Lewis struck out three straight.

The Raiders got 11 runs on 9 hits, 6 walks., and no errors. Two thirds of Lewis' pitches were strikes. It was one of Ajo's best games this year.

Ajo is ranked 29th. The top 24 make the playoffs. Above them are San Pasqual, Gila Bend, & Phoenix Christian. Errors haunt. The Raiders would likely need to win at least four of their last five to sneak in.
