The businesses at the corner of Commercial and Nevada streets in downtown Portola are open again after the Aug. 28 fire. The fire caused smoke and water damage to the buildings and resulted in the total loss of the former Ponderosa Bowl building.

While the site of the old bowling alley sits in ruins behind a fence, the owner of the small plaza on the corner, Jan Breitwieser, had her tenants back up and running just one week following the fire.

"Everyone has just been great," said Breitwieser. She said the city was great to work with, her engineer came out the next morning and had reports done right away, the insurance adjustors came immediately and environmental experts were on scene quickly as well.

This fast and supportive response allowed for work to be completed and businesses to open the Friday before Labor Day weekend, just one week after the fire.
