Coffee bar, bistro to feature late-night fare

Gallery Espresso has reopened and it truly is bigger and better than ever.

After seven seasons at First

Street Station in Rehoboth Beach, owners John and Judy Rioux decided to leave the Nation's Summer Capital when the shopping center was renovated. Judy says the move was a blessing in disguise.

"We always wanted to have a second location, so we had been looking at this place for a while," she said. "We always wanted a liquor license; we always wanted to be a late-night place. But we could never have a liquor license downtown."

Gallery Espresso has reopened at The Vineyards on Route 9 as a 6,000-square-foot coffee house and bistro. John said the old location was only 1,800 square feet. The new location is split into two distinct areas: the familiar coffee bar and a full-service restaurant.

The coffee house will have wi-fi and a breakfast and lunch menu with no wait staff. The breakfast menu will include Gallery Espresso's popular breakfast paninis, crepes, baked goods and waffles. Lunch will feature paninis, ham and brie, and roast beef with horseradish.

"This, we hope, will be a nice, community hangout where people will come and eat, enjoy themselves and relax a little," John said of the coffee house.

The restaurant portion will be what John described as good food at a reasonable price. Judy said the menu is still under construction.

"We're trying to keep entrees between $15 and $22 so people can come here regularly," John said.

The couple says they are developing a phone app so customers can order by phone and pick up later.

John said the restaurant will be open until 10 p.m., but customers can still get food at the coffee house, which will have a limited menu but will be open until 1 a.m.

Both sections will have full bars.

"It's not going to be like other restaurants where it's like, 'Sorry, we're closed.' You'll still be able to get food here," John said. 'We're trying to create something that we would enjoy, that we think other people like us will also enjoy."

In the spring, John said Gallery Espresso would install a fire pit and have outdoor seating.

Gallery Espresso started in Rehoboth in 2007, when Judy and her sister decided to go into business together. After her sister dropped out of the project, John came in, and the two opened Gallery Espresso as a coffee shop. Judy said it was always their vision to have a full-service restaurant, but a second location never materialized.

"We felt kind of constrained downtown, so we're very happy to kind of spread our wings out here," John said.

Gallery Espresso will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the coffee house and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the restaurant.
