Baldwin County Sheriff Deputy Mike Malone was killed late Sunday afternoon, Jan. 17, when a train struck him as he sat in a chair on or near railroad tracks in Greene County.

Baldwin County Sheriff Huey "Hoss" Mack said Deputy Malone was killed while hunting. Malone was in a chair on or near railroad tracks near Eutaw.

"The accident is being investigated by the Greene County Sheriff's Office and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. They are trying to find out why the off-duty officer would station his hunting stand in such a deadly spot," said Sheriff Mack.

"Deputy Malone has family in Eutaw and he was visiting with them and went hunting about 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Sometime after that is is when Deputy Malone was apparently struck and killed by a train. He was a good deputy and will be missed."

Malone has worked with the Baldwin Sheriff's Department since October of 2002.

Deputy Malone worked into the criminal patrol division of the sheriff's office until 2008 then he transferred to criminal investigations division and was also a member on the Sheriff's Department Emergency Response Team.

Sheriff Mack said, "Malone and other officers had taken hunting trips to the area before, but this weekend, only Malone and his father, Herb Malone, president and CEO of the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau, were there.

Mack added that officials are working to determine if several beer cans found alongside the tracks belonged to Michael Malone.

We are not sure at this point if they were his, and that is part of the reason I asked for a full investigation of this. A toxicology report should give us an answer about that. An autopsy was set for early Tuesday, Jan. 19, in Montgomery.

Deputy Malone, age 33, leaves behind a wife, Amy.

Sheriff Mack said, "The Baldwin County Sheriff's Department ask that everyone pray for the Malone family."
