Friday, Jan. 29, an 18-wheeler truck driven by Tony Richey crashes through the front of the Demopolis Police Department building that has been under going renovation and was on scheduled to open some time in February.

The truck was traveling north on Cedar Street when it veered to the right at the red light intersection of Washington Avenue. Going nose first through the boarded up window and traveling all the way into the office area, it finally stopped.

The approximate time of the crash was 11:15 a.m. according to Demopolis Police Chief Tommy Reese.

"No one was injured, but one of the construction workers did sustain some bruises," said Chief Reese. "The wreck is under investigation at this time. No charges have been filed at this. The truck did hit one of the main support beams and knocked it out of place."

After the wreck, city workers and firemen were cleaning up fluids in the office area that came from the trucks radiator. Also the ceiling was sagging were the support beam was dislodged. Loose bricks, broken glass and smashed 2 x 4's littered the area.

The truck was not loaded and only the very end of the trailer and a half of the rear set of wheelers were sticking out of the building.

Chief Reese would not confirm or deny that drugs or alcohol played a part in this wreck. He would not confirm or deny if a sobriety test was given to the driver of the truck.

City Clerk Paula Byrd said by phone, "The architect and the contractors that designed the project and are doing the work on the building, have been combing over and over the building to determine the damage and to make sure the building in safe for city and construction workers that are in the building daily. There had been a support built and put in place where one of the main supports was knocked out of place by the truck."

"The insurance companies are also involved in this process," said Chief Reese.
