Wharton County Annual Day of Caring is set for Friday

The United Way has designated Friday as the Wharton County Annual Day of Caring, and applications for minor home repair services are available.

Applications to request minor home repairs are available by calling the United Way office at 979-245-5852 to have an application mailed to them Interested persons may also visit the United Way at 2417 Avenue G, Bay City or the El Campo Boys and Girls Club to pick up an application.

To be eligible, an applicant must be a senior citizen 65 years of age or older or have a disability. They must also own their home.

The work will all be done on the Day of Caring by United Way volunteers at no cost to the selected applicants. Examples of eligible repairs include painting, building wheel chair ramps; installing bathroom safety grips; power washing houses, driveways and sidewalks; yard maintenance; planting flowers; help with spring cleaning, changing door locks; repairing window screens; replacing light bulbs; painting porches and other small carpentry projects. One-hundred percent of the work is done by community volunteers. Materials are provided and there is no cost to the homeowner. Not all applications can be accepted. The United Way regrets that it can only accept projects that can be completed in one day by available volunteers and resources.

Volunteers are also needed and can signup by calling the United Way or emailing it at The event is a unique opportunity for volunteers to see how their time and generosity impacts the individuals in our community. The day will be a busy and fulfilling one for participants.
