Wharton County Freedom Fest is Saturday, and organizers hope everyone will come on out and enjoy live music, food, drinks and fun for the kids.

The annual event, moved to May for the third year in a row for the cooler weather (at least, cooler than late June), will be held Saturday around Monterey Square in downtown Wharton.

The event kicks off with a two-day barbecue cook-off on Friday at Riverfront Park.

Billed as the "Patriotic Party on the Square," the event is an early celebration for Memorial Day. To keep with the holiday tradition, there will be a Veterans' Parade and Salute as part of the festivities. That begins at 6 p.m.

Saturday's activities open with a car show from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Foods, crafts and game booths will be open from noon to midnight, and helicopter rides will be available from noon to dusk.

There will be more than 25 booths this year, and more than 11 of them are for food.

This year booths will be serving up barbecue, jerk chicken, snow cones, funnel cakes, kettle com, fresh fruit drinks, roasted corn, cookies and more.

H-E-B will sponsor a crawfish boil beginning at 2 p.m.

Other activities available will be a bungy jump, buckin'bull, inflatable obstacle course and bounce houses. There will also be a bocce ball tournament.

The Wharton Jazz Trio will be performing at the Milam Street Coffee Shop from 4 to 7 p.m.

After the Veterans' Salute, the El Campo Cotton Square Dancers will perform at 6:30 p.m.

One of the highlights of the event is a lights-and-music laser show, which begins at 9:30 p.m. The lasers will bounce between the Wharton County Courthouse and Plaza Theatre.

Before and after the laser show, Horizon Band will perform for a street dance from 7:30 p.m. to midnight.
