Norman Otterkill, 87, of Bemidji and Bagley, died on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 at the Tender Hearts Assisted Living in Blackduck, Minn. of complications from Parkinson's disease.

His funeral was held Saturday, Dec. 28 at the Grace Chapel south of Bagley, with Rev. Karl Anderson officiating. Interment was at the Rice Lutheran Cemetery in Zerkel, Minn. Military rites were accorded by the Irvin Blix American Legion Post No. 16 of Bagley.

Norman was born June 7, 1926 in Duluth, the son Ted and Inga (Klepp) Otterkill. As a youngster he moved to Rice Township south of Zerkel. At the age of 14 he moved to St. Paul, where he graduated from Murray High School in 1943. Norman served a tour of duty in the United States Navy. After his tenure of service he worked with his father doing plastering and drywall in St. Paul. In 1970 Norman moved to Bagley where he partnered with Weldon Nelson to form Nelson-Otterkill Construction. They were pioneers in building housing for low to moderate income families in northern Minnesota. Many individuals have bene fitted fromNorman's determination and success in providing safe, decent, and affordable housing. They also formed Bemidji Management Co. Due to illness, Norman was forced to retire.

Norman was married to Frances Olson and after many years they were divorced. He married Sandy Warrington and they were later divorced.

Norman enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family who he loved very much. He had a compassion for flying and owned his own airplane. He went on a mission trip and shared his plastering abilities with the people of Haiti. Norman had a passion for his land and spent many hours improving and enjoying it. Norman was a kind and caring individual.

He is survived by his daughter, Mona (Robert) Olson of Bemidji; son, Jim Otterkill of Park Rapids; stepdaughter, Nicole Mickalson of Bemidji; six grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and 14 great- grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Rice Lutheran Church.
