The Missoula Children's Theatre won't be coming to town this year, but lovers of children's musical theater can still get their fix when Pine Eagle music teacher Denzil Kumar's fourth through eighth grade elementary students take the stage for Pirates! The Musical on Thursday, March 19.

Written by John Jacobson and Roger Emerson, Pirates] tells the story of a young boy who stows away on a pirate ship hoping to become a pirate himself, and finds himself in trouble as he goes on his quest.

"I decided to put on a musical mostly because the Missoula Children's Theatre was not coming to Halfway this year," said Kumar. "I am also using this experience as an experiment to see how well we are able to put on a show utilizing only classroom time. This has been a good challenge for us so far. We are all being pushed to learn and memorize words, music and actions - quickly."

The salty crew has received some valuable help with their musical production from community volunteers.

"Gaye Bledsoe has volunteered her time to direct the show, and I am the musical director," added Kumar. "Wix Covey and Robin Kearns have been heading a team to work on the set for the show. They will be depicting a pirate ship! We have asked the kids to look through their closets for pirate clothing, but welcome any community support in costuming."

The show is expected to last about 40 minutes, and students will have two matinee performances during school on March 19 in the Pine Eagle Primary gym. The first performance will start at 1:30 p.m. and the second at 2:30 p.m. Parents and community members are welcome to attend either show.
