After last week's standoff and shooting death off Lexco Road, Saturday the Torrance County Sheriff’s department were searching for a man in the Edgewood area after a woman who was severely cut ran to a neighbor's house for help after jumping out the window. .

Last week as The Independent went to press, a police standoff and SWAT situation ended when State Police shot and killed Ernest Atterberry.

Torrance County Sheriff Heath White said that his department "had dealt with him in the past" but "nothing really significant."

Asked if police know what set the man off—he had shot at law enforcement, including police and National Guard helicopters—White answered, "I talked to him for a period of time on the phone trying to talk him down, how to resolve this peacefully, and he didn't want any part of it. He was very agitated, not just with law enforcement but with life in general. That was the way he saw the way out."

On Saturday, Marcy Roesch heard banging on the door of her home just south of Edgewood, and found her neighbor Darlene Albert covered with blood.

White said the woman had been attacked by her husband or boyfriend and was lucky to escape with her life.

Deputies searched for the man, using police dogs and the department's helicopter, but were not able to locate him. The sheriff said the search is ongoing.

"This is fairly common," the sheriff said. "I hate to say that, but you know the only thing different was it went just that little bit further where obviously if she had not jumped out of the window hwe would have probably been dead— that's how bad she was getting beaten. She's lucky she made that choice."

White said Tuesday morning that his department had already, responded to three incidents of domestic violence. "Unfortunately we go through these domestic situations every day, day and night."
