Accident injures two

Two Lassen County residents sustained injuries during a Tuesday, Dec. 27 vehicle roll-over on Highway 36 east of Devil's Corral.

According to a press release from the California Highway Patrol, at approximately 11:55 p.m. Rhonda Bechthold, 50, of Westwood, was driving a 1989 Dodge Dakota westbound on Highway 36 at approximately 50 to 55 miles per hour and lost control of her vehicle due to the icy conditions. The vehicle traveled off the north roadway edge onto the dirt gravel shoulder and overturned.

The passenger, a 10-year-old girl, also of Westwood, sustained major injuries and was Life Flighted to Renown Medical Center in Reno, Nev. The press release said the passenger was not using safety equipment.

The driver, who was using safety equipment, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Banner Lassen Medical Center.

Due to the girl's injuries, the CHP is not releasing her name until a status update is received. As of press time, she was listed in critical condition.

The weather was cloudy and wet at the time of the accident. The incident is under investigation.
