Wilmer Gene Elbers, 76, of Brandon, S.D., formerly of Steen, Minn, passed away on December 25, 2013 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services were Dec. 28 at Steen Reformed Church in Steen, with Rev. Dan Kuik officiating. Burial followed at Eastside Cemetery in Steen.

Wilmer "Willie" Elbers was born Oct. 3, 1937 to Edward and Verna (VanderHaar) Elbers. He grew up in Steen and graduated from Hills High School in 1955. Wilmer married Betty Boeve Oct. 6, 1959 and they resided in Hills, Minn, for most of their life until they moved to Brandon, S.D. in 2006. He was a baptized member of Steen Reformed Church and served as a deacon. Wilmer's business endeavors included milk hauling, construction, retail appliance sales, and various manufacturing. He invested in various businesses and real estate, but spent most of his career as owner/CEO of Hills Stainless Steel now located in Luverne, Minn. Wilmer served as a volunteer firefighter, member of the Eagles Club and the Rock County Agricultural Society.

Wilmer is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty; five children, Darwin (Kim) Elbers of Sioux Falls, S.D., Peggy (Chad) Hill of Charlotte, N.C., Twila (Tom) Walker of Luverne, Minn., Nyla (Mack) Hucks of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Cheryl Elbers of Sioux Falls, S.D.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild and three siblings, Nelvina Kroese, Edwin Elbers, and Ruth Verbrugge.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one stillborn son.
