HENDERSON COUNTY-A known criminal with a violent history, Rudolfo "Rudy" Sanchez-Leon, of Chandler, turned himself in to the Henderson County Sheriff's Office Dec. 26 evening and according to authorities has been charged with attempted capital murder.

Sanchez-Leon is suspected of shooting at a police officer Dec. 26 then fleeing the scene while armed with a .308 caliber rifle in the 400 block of Magnolia Lane in Chandler.

At 1 a.m. Saturday morning, a 9-1-1 call was received by the Chandler Police Department from the residence but no one was heard on the call. Police shortly arrived at the residence.

After entering the residence and observing Sanchez-Leon behind a Christmas tree with a weapon, a Chandler police sergeant instructed Sanchez-Leon to put down the weapon. He did not put down the weapon and fired a shot at the sergeant, which hit the floor in front of her.

The sergeant fired one shot while returning to her vehicle. Sanchez-Leon proceeded to fire three more rounds at the police vehicle, while she called for back-up.

Further investigation by the Chandler police found that Sanchez-Leon and his sister had a physical fight about the weapon.

A relative said the sister-brother confrontation originated over Sanchez-Leon bringing a pet into the house where a child has asthma.

Henderson County Sheriff's Office Tactical Squad surrounded the home believing the suspect to be inside. Around 7 a.m., the deputies entered the house and discovered Sanchez-Leon gone.

The suspect was reportedly seen leaving the home and jumping a fence with the rifle.

The Chandler officer was not hit or injured in the incident.
