The next meeting of the North Manchester Historical Society will be Monday, February 9, at 6:00 p.m. in the Timbercrest Assembly Room. Dr. Jerry Sweeten, of Manchester College, will speak on the Eel River Clean Up Project that he is directing over the next couple of years.

With the Eel River Project, Sweeten is heading up a large grant, which involves many area agencies and groups along with Manchester College students. Many people will have hands-on experiences.

Dr. Sweeten says, "The grant will fund a watershed management plan: identification and remediation of high priority water pollution sites; scientific monitoring of flow, pollutants and aquatic organisms; and public outreach."

The watershed is all the land from which water drains into a river or stream. His project is focused on the middle third of the Eel River watershed, where North Manchester is located.

"Our goal is to make the Eel River a better place for aquatic life and people. It's a tremen-dous natural resource that's been neglected for many years," Sweeten said.

Sweeten graduated from Manchester College in 1975 in Biology and Environmental Studies. In 1982 he received his Master's degree in Natural Resources and Biology from Ball State University and in 1996 the Ph.D. degree in Stream Ecology from Purdue University.

The North

Manchester Historical Society will receive money to build a model of the thirty-mile stretch of the Eel River where the town is located. This model will help the public visualize the scope of the clean-up project.

Reservation for the dinner ($7.00) should be made by calling Karl at 982-2216 or Evelyn at 982-6777. Call before noon on Friday, February 6. The program, beginning at 6:40 is free to the public. Everyone is welcome.
