Silver State Post of Deer Lodge, Montana

Last year marked my first full 12 months in the United States and the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition. 2012 will always go down as one of my favorites, thanks in no small part to our move from the downtown of Minneapolis to the rural splendor of Deer Lodge and Powell County.

My wife and I have been here since the middle of April and not for one second have I craved to be anywhere else. Time really does fly by when you are having fun. Our very quick integration into Montana living has been attributable to the warm and generous spirit afforded to us by this wonderful community I am so happy to be able to call home. Thank you, all. As the snow begins to fall gently outside the office once again, I cannot help but look back at some of my favorite assignments to date. The first one that springs to mind was watching artificial insemination take place at the Thomas Hereford Ranch in Gold Creek. Never before had I experienced anything like it and I am grateful to Bruce Thomas and his family for allowing me the chance to be there and watch it in the flesh, so to speak.

Come to think of it a lot of my most memorable articles have emanated from the many small towns spread across this fantastic county. I think my love affair with Ovando is well known by now but I have also relished the task of speaking with great people in the other oudying towns, too. The turkey shoot in Helmville, the Christmas party in Avon and the wonderful pupils of the school in Garrison have made my job as a journalist an absolute breeze. Deer Lodge has also served me well. I have taken immense pleasure in being here for the grand reopening of the Rialto in addition to other exciting things, too, like the recent plans announced by the DLDG.

One other thing I did work out in 2012 was not to be too pro-British around the Fourth of July. Even joking about it is not worth it. Rest assured the same thing will not happen again in seven months time. While my allegiance will always be to the Union Jack, not for one second have I taken for granted this wonderful opportunity I have here in America. If I say one negative thing about the United States then my wife will take care of me, if you know what I mean.

On a personal note, Anna and myself have adjusted wonderfully to Montana even though my wife does crave the odd bit of Wisconsin once in a while. Foundations have been laid and I envisage us remaining in this delightful part of the world for many years to come.

The opportunity afforded to me by my boss, Tom Mullen will always be greatly appreciated. Through no coercion what soever, I can say, without hesitation, that I have landed on my feet in Deer Lodge. It is a pleasure coming into the office everyday, being with colleagues who, also, have an undeniable passion for their roles.

I am very excited about what this new year will bring. For the next 52 weeks and beyond I will strive to bring you all the very latest news from our community. I will continue to devote myself completely to the Silver State Post cause, ensuring fair and accurate reporting at all times.

I hope you will all enjoy the journey with us.
