Ritchie County Historical Society hosted a special meeting Thursday, Jan. 22, to determine appropriate action regarding the anonymous donation of 100 shares of stock.

The stock was valued at over $10,000 and was received in late December. What a Christmas present!

After discussing the pros and cons of keeping or selling the stock, the Historical Society members voted to sell the stock and make a large payment on the society's mortgage loan.

The society went nearly $60,000 in debt a few years back to complete major repairs needed on the Old Stone House Museum and additional repairs needed on the old B & O Depot.

The debt had been worked down to $35,000 through generous donations, various fundraisers, sales of books, maps, CDs and dues from members.

Having been in a constant fundraiser mode and continually asking for financial assistance from the community, it was agreed the most appropriate action would be to apply this generous donation to the balance of the loan.

Simple math reveals a significant balance is still due on the loan.

The Historical Society will continue to seek support from the community as hand in hand their efforts will preserve these historic buildings and their contents for future generations.

Upcoming fundraiser events hosted by the society include: a Genealogy and History Fair set for Saturday, March 28, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at The Gym, in Harrisville; and a Spaghetti Dinner, Friday, April 10, at the Pennsboro Woman's Club.

The society's next meeting will be Thursday, Feb. 26, 2:00 p.m. at the Pennsboro Library.

Anyone interested in joining or helping the historical society is encouraged to attend.
