Ritchie County Sheriff's deputies were attempting to serve a mental hygiene pick up order on Doug Cottrell Wednesday, Jan. 21.

A petition was filed in Ritchie County Circuit Court by a friend who witnessed Cottrell make threats to hurt himself Wednesday.

Sheriff's deputies traveled to Cottrell's residence on Brush Run, off of State Route 74, near the Tyler County line, at 4:30 p.m.

Cottrell was not found at his residence in Ritchie County, so deputies began checking with the Tyler County Sheriff's office to help locate Cottrell.

Cottrell had resided in Tyler County before moving to Ritchie County.

At 6 p.m., the Ritchie County Sheriff's Department received a telephone call stating Cottrell was back at his home on Brush Run.

Deputy C. D. Cox and Deputy K. Barnes traveled to Cottrell's residence and made contact with him.

Cottrell was talking on the telephone with a brother in Washington, DC, and talking with deputies through a partially open window.

According to the release from the sheriff's office, the deputies could hear Cottrell say to his brother he had to go into town with the deputies.

Cottrell then hung up the telephone, walked past the window and sat down on the coach.

At that time, deputies heard a pop sound and knew there was a shot fired.

Deputy Cox breached the door and Deputy Barnes radioed 9-1-1 dispatch for an ambulance and to alert the emergency center of the situation.

Ritchie County Sheriff Bryan Backus, Cpl. T. M. Jackson of the sheriff's department, Trooper J. L. Brewer and Trooper S. M. Brewer responded to the scene.

Ritchie County Emergency Medical personnel transported Cottrell to a landing zone near Haddox Run Road.

He was flown from the landing zone by AirEvac to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Cottrell succumbed to the self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday, Jan. 22.
