Ritchie County Board of Education approved increases in pay for directors during their meeting Tuesday evening, May 26.

Superintendent Ed Toman brought the matter before the board at the previous meeting as information.

He asked the board to be thinking about possible supplements for the directors at the previous May meeting.

During Tuesday's meeting, Toman asked for supplements for the directors, treasuerer and maintenance workers.

He stated compared to surrounding counties, the directors in Ritchie County are the smallest in number.

He said there have been people moved out of director's positions and the current directors have stepped up to fill in those positions.

"I think it is well deserved," Toman stated.

He presented a recommendation of a supplement in the amount of $3,400 for the treasurer and directors.

The directors include: David Weekley, director of support services and attendance; Debbie Bever, director of special education and federal programs; and April Haught. director of instructional services.

Regina Epperly is the board treasurer.

Toman stated the treasurer's contract is negotiable.

He said he feels Epperly is one of the best treasurers in the state.

He said the directors are on call all of the time.

He also recommended a $2,000 supplement for the three maintenance personnel, who have certifications in different fields.

Toman stated there used to be six maintenance people in the department, but due to retirements there are only three in the department at this time.

Toman said the three maintenance workers do a lot of mowing throughout the spring and summer since there are only three of them.

He said he has looked at a mowing contract, but based on numbers from other counties he has worked in, he feels the board would be paying out $20,000 for someone else to complete the mowing at the schools.

The board took the two recommendations separately.

A motion was made to approve the $2,000 supplement for the maintenance workers.

Board member Andrew Cowan stated there had been many changes to the maintenance personnel's job and they have to be certified in different areas.

"Many things have to be done by licensed contractors," Cowan stated.

Board members voted in favor of the motion.

Board member Scott Walton stated he would rather wait until next year and give the directors a larger raise.

"We just in the black and I would rather wait until next year and give them a bigger raise," Walton stated.

Epperly stated the last supplement approved by the board was in 2007.

Board member Ed Cokeley stated the pay for the directors is significantly below what other counties are paying.

Board members Cokeley, Cowan and Melanie Vogt-McCloy voted in favor of the $3,400 supplement for the maintenance workers.

Board member Walton opposed the motion.

The next Ritchie County Board of Education meeting will be Monday, June 8, at 6 p.m., at the DWC Building, Harrisville.
