The 2012 Fine Art and Photography Show sponsored by the Hell's Canyon Art Guild was the best yet! Our local artists and photographers along with entrants from Emmett and Boise exhibited works that showcased outstanding talents. A great variety of artistic media were displayed, including oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, pencil and colored pencil drawings, photographs, and wood and antler sculptures. Except for a few wind gusts on Saturday, the beautiful weekend weather brought over 250 folks to the show!

Seventy-eight entries were received this year from both amateurs and professionals. Entries were judged in the categories of photography, 3-dimensional, painting, and drawing. Ribbons and prize money were given to the top three pieces in each category, as well as for "Best of Show" and "People's Choice" The "Best of Theme" ribbon was awarded to the work of art or photography that best depicted the theme, "Yesterday and Today in Hells Canyon Country"

Winners in the following categories were:

Professional Photography: Larry Rose first, second and third places.

Amateur Photography: David Wert first place; Molly Gesenhues second place; Susan Sorenson third place. Honorable Mentions went to Mike Larkin, Rebecca Lacey, Anna Owsiak, Mari Sorenson, Alvin Yantis, Susan Sorenson, Jake Thacher and Piper Walters.

Amateur Drawing: Anna Owsiak first and second places; Kathryn Wert third place.

Amateur Painting:

Nina Hawkins first place; Betty Ward second place; Joyce Close third place. Honorable Mentions went to Kathryn Wert, Debbie Warren, Joyce Close, and Gail Massey.

Professional Painting: Tom Cunningham first and second places; Kaye York third place.

Amateur 3-Dimensional: Craig Green first place.

Professional 3-Dimensional: Larry Russell first and third places; Virgil Butler second place.

Best of Show was awarded to Cambridge's own Kaye York, for her painting titled "Dwarf Huckleberry" It is beautiful river scene with splashes of autumn red huckleberry leaves. Best of Theme was also awarded to Kaye York for her painting tided "Frosty Morning at Warner's" depicting a winter scene of the Warner place in Bear, Idaho. People's Choice was awarded to Jake Thacher for his darling photo tided "Got Ya Mom" showing a young paint foal who had just grabbed a mouthful of his mother's tail. Congratulations to all the winners and to all the exhibitors who made this show so successful!

This year's judge was Gloria Dawson-Teats of White Bird, who is known for her landscape paintings, many showing the mountains and canyons of the Snake and Salmon Rivers. Gloria really enjoyed the opportunity to judge the show and complimented the exhibitors on the outstanding quality of the exhibited pieces. "This is a very nice show!" She also enjoyed seeing the works of the artists from this area and the subject matter they portrayed.

The Hell's Canyon Art Guild would like to extend its deepest appreciation to the Cambridge Library for again hosting the show and to all the participating artists who made this year's show so outstanding! Just a reminder to all of our artists to keep those pencils, paintbrushes and lenses sharp and at the ready for the 2013 show!
