Pleasants Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Jody Murphy, chamber board presideni Rod Sayre and vice president Don Harding were on hand Wednesday, April 15 to welcome Cris Carter and the Blue Collar Massage Therapy and Body Shop to the Pleasants County business community.

"It's always nice to have another new business open here in Pleasants County," Murphy stated.

Carder, who recently opened his new business at 201 George St. (next to Fleming Insurance), said his main reason for starting the business was to help working folks with the everyday aches and pains, hence the name "Blue Collar."

Carder received his massage therapy training at Washington State Community College where the school offers a one-year certificate program. Carder said the program's curriculum covers much of the same material as the physical therapist assistant's program, just not as in-depth.

According to the first time business owner, much of starting a new business is learning all the applicable rules, regulations and laws.

"I didn't know if there were any health department regulations for this kind of business, if I needed a B & O license, if I needed to pay worker's compensation, if I needed insurance, just a lot of little legalities," he stated.

"In the courses I took at Washington State, I learned about the different types of massage therapy, the one most commonly used being the Swedish massage," Carder explained.

Carder said that the Swedish massage uses a combination of long sweeping strokes, muscle kneading and rolling, friction, and tapping movements, to help relieve pain and soreness and increase circulation and relax the muscles. He also uses both scented and unscented oils, lotions and gels.

Carder said his hours are designed for working folks who can't always get away during the day. Appointments can be made Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m., 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Saturdays and 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Sundays. Appointments can be made by calling Carder at 304.299.0678. His rates are $60 per hour and he will also do partial hours.
