A Blountstown man was charged with battery after deputies were called to the Scotts Ferry Store on SR 71 Monday night after a woman called to report that there was a combative, drunk man in the road whose head bleeding.

After being checked by EMS, Calhoun County Sheriff's Deputy Zachary Whitfield spoke with the injured man, identified as 63-year-old Tommy G. Armstrong.

When asked what happened to him, Armstrong said some hit him in the head but he didn't remember how it happened.

His wife was standing nearby and told the deputy she had been driving along SR 71 South when a vehicle came up behind her at a high rate of speed, flashing its lights before passing her. When the vehicle pulled out into the oncoming lane, she recognized it as her husband's truck.

She caught up with him a short time later in the parking lot of the store. She said she stopped to see if he was OK and found him extremely intoxicated. She said they began arguing about him drinking and driving. When she got into the truck to take the keys from the ignition, she said Armstrong grabbed her leg and started pulling her out of the truck. She stated that was when he fell backwards and hit his head on the pavement.

She then called for an ambulance but Armstrong refused treatment.

He was then taken into custody for domestic battery due to pulling his wife out of the truck. The deputy's report stated Armstrong was combative and did not want to get in the patrol car.

Once he was settled in and on the way to jail, Armstrong threatened his wife and then told the deputy he needed a doctor because he was "feeling woozy."

EMS met him at the jail and transported him to the hospital, where he got a medical clearance before being booked in.
