Grandma's watching

our view:

In newspapers we try to follow the philosophy of, "Grandma is watching."

It helps us decide where to draw the line in our stories, editorials, photographs and letters to the editor we run in the Silver State Post. If we know our grandmas are watching, we're less likely to pull any shenanigans and stick to the straight and narrow,

A bar fight last week resulted in a stabbing, a broken nose and public embarrassment for the local tavern it happened at.

The week before, a man tried to pleasure himself in front of a bartender at 4:30 in the afternoon at another establishment.

On the front page of the SSP this week, a man decided to engage in a high speed chase against traffic, endangering a number of lives, including his own.

Let's put the responsibility where it lays. We are free thinking beings. We have choices and consequences for those choices. If we're not prepared to face the consequences we shouldn't commit the deed.

It's your choice if you want to make repeated phone calls to someone and raise your voice and wave you arms in city hall, but you better be ready for someone to smack you in the back of the head and tell you to stop and start acting like a civilized person.

If the feds decide to kick the door down on the marijuana grow operation in town, the kids who started it should be prepared. They are violating a federal law. Even if they do comply with state laws. They shouldn't be surprised when a number of people in the community are against it. They can read the paper and watch the news. They can talk to any number of citizens in this county to feel out public opinion.

Use your brain. We're taught to be critical thinkers in our schools and by our parents. Don't act like you've missed out on ages three to 18.

We all do stupid things. But there's a reason that little voice is inside our head telling us what we should or shouldn't do.

The next time you're thinking about trying to impress the ladies by pulling out your privates, ask yourself, "Would grandma approve?"

If she wouldn't and you don't have a very, very good reason to disagree with her, keep it in your pants.
