MidAmerican Energy Performs Tree Maintenance

MidAmerican Energy Company is trimming trees in order to improve the reliability of its electric service. While the company prunes trees all year long, fall is a crucial time as crews work to get ahead of winter storms.

"Falling trees or branches due to high winds or heavy snowfall cause up to 10 percent of all electrical outages," said Jason Ewers, MidAmerican Energy manager of vegetation management. "Preventative tree care around wires and poles is vital to keeping our customers safe, protecting their property and keeping their lights on."

Tree maintenance crews have been working this fall to trim trees in communities throughout the company's service territory, including Bettendorf, Carroll, Clarinda, Council Bluffs, Correctionville, Davenport, Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Iowa City, Sioux City and Waterloo, Iowa, as well as East Moline and Silvis, Illinois.

MidAmerican Energy contracts with companies that specialize in utility tree trimming and crews are supervised by International Society of Arboriculture-certified arborists. When deciding to trim or remove a tree, the experts take into account several factors, such as the type and anticipated growth pattern of the tree, its relation to overhead power lines, its overall health and its movement in wind.

Customers are notified by mail approximately three weeks before work begins in their neighborhood. There is no service charge assessed to perform the work. If you are concerned about trees near power lines on your property, contact MidAmerican Energy at 888-427-5632 or trees@midamerican.com.

According to Ewers, fall is also an ideal time to plant trees. In addition to beautifying your property, trees can reduce heating and cooling costs by providing shade in the summer and windbreak in the winter. MidAmerican Energy offers several tree planting programs, including Plant Some Shade for homeowners and Trees Please! grants for communities. More information about these programs is available on the company's website.
