Out and About in Bertram

As this column is written on 1/31/16, we have effectively gone through four seasons of weather in about 52 hours — from below freezing to 85 warm degrees! Today, I have seen mosquitoes, flies, moths and butterflies, and I've heard frogs croaking down at the stock tank. My coral honeysuckle has not stopped blooming since summer, I have some iris blooms, a few trees are budding out, and live oaks have been dropping leaves for the last couple of weeks.

This crazy weather has certainly turned Mother Nature topsy-turvy! Can spring be far behind?

Thrift Store News

Bertram's Library Thrift store has some very exciting news for February! It has added two new days to its schedule and will be open Monday and Tuesday from 11 a.m. — 5 p.m., Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5p.m., and Saturday from 11a.m. — 2 p.m.

Drop by to meet the new manager and check out the store's new look.

Library activities

Bertram's Joann Cole Mitte Memorial Library will be a busy place next month. From Feb. 1-5, the library will have a "bag" sale. Fill a bag with outdated books, magazines and videos for only $2. Such a deal!

Then, on Feb. 13 from 5:30-10 p.m., the library will hold another of its popular Parents Night Out Programs. For only $10 per child (18 months and older) the Friends of the Library will provide games, movies and snacks in a safe environment. Drop a child or children off and enjoy a "date night" with the spouse, dinner with friends, or shopping without the worry of keeping an eye on kids.

The library has provided this service several times recently, and it has been wildly popular. However, space is limited so call the library at 512-355-2113 to reserve a spot.

The dues for Friends of the Library memberships should be paid in February. For those who can, stop by the library or mail a dues check to: Joann Cole Mitte Memorial Library, 170 N. Gabriel, Bertram, TX 78605. Be sure to include name, address, phone number and e-mail for the Membership Directory and select from following: Individual membership, $5; Family membership, $10; Business membership, $25; Individual Lifetime, $100; or Family Lifetime, $150.

Gardening Events

Today, Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m., Bertram's Prairie Flower Garden Club will meet in the Library Meeting Room for its monthly meeting.

Afterward, the club will go to the Bertram Elementary greenhouse, where members will be treated to a glimpse of the ACE after school gardening program. Teacher Virginia Downing will conduct the tour.

On Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 10:30 a.m., Master Gardener Rosalyn Lackey will present a free program entitled "You too can grow artichokes" in the Library Meeting Room. All are invited.

Fat Tuesday Annual Dinner

Bertram's First United Methodist Church will have its Annual Fat Tuesday Pancake Supper on Feb. 9 at the Allied Underground (formerly Lewis Contractors) Building, Hot plates of pancakes and sausage will be served from 5:30-7 p.m.

The entire Bertram/Burnet County community is invited, so come along and bring or join family, neighbors and friends! This is a free dinner, but contributions are welcome to benefit the church's local mission activities in our community.

Ministry Alliance

Bertram's Ministry Alliance will hold its annual fundraiser Friday, Feb. 19, at the Bertram Elementary School Cafeteria.

This year, it is a soup supper along with a silent auction. The food will be served starting at 5 p.m., and the silent auction will go from 5-6:30 p.m.

The Ministry Alliance helps needy families in the Bertram area with their water bills. Their funding comes from fundraisers and donations.

Anyone who has quality auction items to donate to this cause is asked to contact the following churches: Bertram First Baptist, 512-355-2167; Bertram First United Methodist, 512-355-3210, or Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 512-355-2182.

That's all the news for this week. Email me at marcimasterson@gmail.com if you have information for this column. The deadline is always Saturday.
