Time for more R and R

For the past 5 or 6 years, in September, Best Friend and I go up to son Jason's place near Detroit Lakes for a family reunion of our family and Best Friend's family.

It is a long weekend of fun, fishing and folly. With five acres of land there is plenty of room for campers, with electric hook ups. We pool the food and prepare breakfasts and suppers together in the house, and lunch and snacking throughout the day. With a lot going on I will not bore you with the details, but I would be remissed if I didn't tell you about son Joe's big catch. Saturday afternoon I went out with Joe in his boat. After fishing awhile for pan fish, Joe decided to try casting with a spinner bait. On the first cast, right near the shore, a northern pike grabbed it and at first he thought it was a pike, but it didn't make a run until it got halfway to the boat. At that point Joe asked me to get the net. At that point I guess I wasn't reeling my rig in, and he then said "get the net NOW!" By that time I had the net and saw the fish, and thought holy cow that's a monster. Then the fish took a run and after a few minutes he got it close enough to the boat for me to net it, "got it on the first try!" When it was in the boat we measured it and it was just a bit over 41 inches. He then had to decide if he would keep it or release it. By that time two of the other boats in the party were around and everyone said if you don't keep it you will regret it. So we kept it. He took it home packed in ice in a huge Rubbermaid container.

Have a great week and do good!
