The North Dakota Local Technical Assistance Program (NDLTAP) presented a motor-grader operator training session on Friday, Aug. 28, near Beach to provide local road crew members instruction in new developments and operating techniques.

Operators and supervisors learned from an instructor and from each other's experiences with road grading. The training included one day of classroom instruction and one day of hands-on training.

NDLTAP was established in 1984 and is operated in partnership between NDSU and the N.D. Department of Transportation as part of the Federal Highway Administration's (FWHA) Local Technical Assistance Program. Funding is provided by the FHWA, NDDOT, the North Dakota Insurance Reserve Fund and NDSU.

Denise Brown, training coordinator, said that the NDLTAP Program, in conjunction with NDSU, was organized to help local road workers learn new and various techniques in improving the grading of county roads. Course instructor was Corey Uhrich, a heavy equipment operator and maintenance instructor at Central Lakes College in Minnesota. Uhrich has worked with heavy equipment since 1994, including 10 years of managing maintenance, operations, and operator training for heavy construction crews.

There were a total of 11 participants from Golden Valley County, which included seven operators, County Road Superintendent Pete Wirtzfeld, and the three county commissioners.

Lessons in the classroom involved topics such as dust-control methods, repair of frost heaves, gravel quality blading techniques, the importance of good gravel, and safe operation. In the field, the crew received hands-on training regarding pre-trip inspection, equipment operation and post-trip inspection.

Although this has been a statewide program for a while, this is the first trip that NDLTAP has made to Beach. RDO Equipment and Butler Cat sponsored the training and provided refreshments and lunch for the participants and instructors.
