A dedication for the new bathhouse at Menno City Park will take place Tuesday evening, Sept. 1. The event will take place at the park beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Darrell Mehlhaf, mayor of Menno, has extended an invitation to the public to attend the event. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for seating if they so desire.

The dedication will cap a long process undertaken by the Menno City Council in an effort to replace the aging and outdated bathroom facilities at Menno City Park. The project to rebuild the facilities got underway after the city received funds from Northwestern Energy as part of a memorial to Gail Guthmiller, a Park Street resident who was killed when her home was destroyed in a natural gas explosion in 2010. NorthWestern Energy is the utility that provides electricity and natural gas services to the Menno community.

The council approved the project and enlisted city employees and members of the South Dakota National Guard 155th Engineering Battalion out of Wagner to complete the project. The group specializes in erecting buildings that contribute to the overall mission and success of the United States Armed Forces. Volunteer labor was also used in the construction of the bathhouse, notably completing the roof of the facility.

In addition to the new restroom facilities, new picnic tables were also purchased with funds from the Guthmiller memorial.

The house in which Guthmiller lived on Park Street, which was completely destroyed in the gas explosion in 2010, was situated directly across the street from the site of the new bathhouse.
