Permanent Fund Dividend Tips from BBB

What to do with $1,281? Advertise-ments are touting plenty of sugges-tions. The first batch of Alaska 2010 Permanent Fund Dividends will be direct deposited and mailed October 7th, according to the Department of Revenue. Better Business Bureau re-minds consumers to protect their PFD from schemes.

"Both Alaskan consumers & businesses get excited about PFDs," said Robert W.G. Andrew, CEO of BBB serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington. "Remember to shop smart & research opportunities because cons also watch headlines and may send extra solicitations for investments, donations or purchases during PFD time."

BBB is here to help with a few tips for consumers, whether they plan to use their PFD to pay bills, invest, save or fund purchases:

Don't Forget Taxes. Set aside some funds for federal income tax purposes, as dividends for both adults & children are taxable. Visit www.irs. gov for more information.

Shop Wisely: The words PFD Sale do not guarantee the best bargain.

Make sure to still shop around and compare. Read ads & coupons; conditions, time frames & restrictions must be listed. If an offer is misrepresented, see the store manager. When making an expensive purchase get everything in writing, including payment details, warranty information, plus return and exchange policies.

Start with Trust: Before buying or giving, visit www.bbb.org to research businesses & charities for free. Utilize BBB Reliability Reports on businesses to make informed buying decisions. And get the facts on charities with BBB Charity Review Reports.
