WIGGINS — Blaylock Park was hopping with activity last Saturday for the fifth annual Pretty in Pink breast cancer awareness event.

It was pink as far as the eye could see with sponsors, vendors, organizers and attendees decked out head to toe in the color which has become associated with the cause.

"It was a very successful day," said Jackie Johnson, founder of the event. "So far, the total raised was $5,200 with more expected as donations continue to come in.

This was the best one we've had in terms of attendees as well as the number of vendors."

This year also featured a new pre-event for survivors.

Walmart hosted, "Pink Out," a gathering at Lakeside Lodge in Flint Creek Water Park Friday evening.

"The survivors had a great time, not only Saturday, but Friday as well," Johnson said. "I'd really like to thank Kimberly Griffin and Walmart for sponsoring the event."

Charles Carter provided Friday's entertainment with his one-man show.

"The entire thing went very well," said Stone County Sheriff Department Chief Deputy Phyllis Olds. "We met several survivors we were unaware of previously."

Tiffany Garcia and her crew from Bangs Salon were on hand Saturday, cutting hair and harvesting pony tails to be donated for wigs.

"All our proceeds from the day will go to the Pink Hearts Fund," Garcia said.

Johnson said 10 pony tails were donated, including one from Madeline McDonald which will go to make a wig for a 3-year-old survivor on the coast. During Saturday's festivities, Mississippi Fault Line provided musical entertainment.

Stone County Sheriff Mike Farmer complimented the members of his staff who donated time and effort to make the event a success.

"I think it says a lot about the people I have in this department who give of their time and energy to selflessly help those less fortunate than themselves," he said.
