The City of Wiggins Board of Aldermen is scheduled to consider signing a memorandum of understanding with Stone County Tuesday which will make the Stone/Wiggins Narcotics Task Force an official arm of law enforcement.

Under consideration tor years, the MOD would allow the task force to apply for grants and other benefits from the state and federal governments.

The Stone County Board of Supervisors has already given its approval to the MOU and Wiggins Mayor Joel Miles was of the belief it was a mere formality with the Board of Aldermen.

"I still have to contact the City Attorney and make sure she is satisfied with the wording and that all the i's are dotted and it's crossed," Miles said. "This is an opportunity to make the task force and even more effective tool in fighting the blight of drugs which has impacted our society."

Capt. Jay Green, task force commander, said he's pleased the MOU will likely be in place soon.

"It will give us the opportunity, maybe, to put on another one or two agents to work in the county and the city," he said. "Sheriff Mike Farmer has been great about supporting us ever since our inception, but this makes things official and it's good to have official agreement between the departments that make up the task force."

Farmer said Stone County and Wiggins residents should be pleased with the efforts made so far by the task force and look forward to even better law enforcement activities once the MOU is in place.

"We have a professional, highly trained set of officers who work diligently to ensure drugs are coming off the streets," he said. "Having an agreement between the county and city will only make the task force more effective."
