USD 341 school board fills 8 positions

Two tutors and two aides were among those hired by the Oskaloosa USD 341 Board of Education when it met the evening of Aug. 10 at the District Office.

On a 6-0 vote, the school board authorized the hiring of Jessica Kittle, Shelly Hailey, Marsha Wise, Linda Mooney, Jennifer Thompson, Malinda Grier, Kelly Hoover and Courtney Weis to fill available positions within the district. Kittle and Hailey will be working as tutors in connection with the Kansas Reading Roadmap program, Wise and Mooney as aides at Oskaloosa Elementary School, and Thompson and Grier as Food Service employees. As for Hoover and Weis, the former will be driving a bus, and the latter will be the yearbook sponsor at OES. The yearbook sponsor is a supplemental position.

The board unanimously approved the proposed Support Staff (i.e., classified personnel) Handbook for the 2015-2016 school year It also unanimously approved the proposed Activity Handbook for the current term.

On hand for the relatively short meeting were board members Matt Lockard, Shelley Urban, Shane Curry, Denise Selbee-Koch, Kim Shuffle-barger and Megan Milner. Lockard the board's vice president, filled in for Jon Henry, president of the board, who could not be present.

The regularly-scheduled board meeting was preceded by a special meeting held to give taxpayers a chance to ask questions and express objections pertaining to the proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2016, which began July 1. At the close of the required public hearing, the budget was adopted on a 6-0 vote.

The 2015-2016 budget caps authorized net expenditures at $8,454,068. That figure includes $6,110,334 for the General Fund and $1,565,231 for the Supplemental General Fund.
