Two incumbents file for re-election; one does not

Weiser Mayor Diana Thomas was unchallenged for another term in office, while seven candidates, including two incumbents, jumped into the race for the three seats on the Weiser City Council up for election.

The deadline to file the paperwork for city office and get on the ballot for the Nov. 3 election was 5 p.m. on Sept. 4. It was a fairly short two-week filing period that began on Aug. 24.

The city council seats up for election are currently held by Layna Hafer, Cliff Barber is and Dan Randleman. Hafer and Barberis filed for re-election.

Randleman previously said he would not seek re-election and did not file for office. With Randleman bowing out, there will be at least one new face on the six-member city council.

The two incumbent candidates in the race were joined by candidates John Jensen, Larry Hogg, Justin Thomas, Lisa Collini and Drake Blackwell.

The top three vote-getters will win seats and four-year terms on the city council.

City council members represent the entire city and can live anywhere in the city. The term of office for council members is four years and there is some compensation. Council members receive $400 per month plus city benefits. The mayor earns $645 per month plus benefits.

Prior to the filing period, Mayor Diana Thomas announced her intent to seek re-election to a second term in city office. She said she filed the paperwork on the first day, Aug. 24.

There is the opportunity to run as a write-in candidate for office for those who missed the filing deadline. The deadline to do that for the city offices is Oct. 6. The deadline for county offices is Sept. 18.

The city election will be run by Washington County in a consolidated election that will also feature the election of board members to some cemetery district and fire district seats in the county. There are also city elections in Midvale and Cambridge.
