City leaders in Rolette are moving forward with a multi-million dollar street project following a special meeting recently.

The city has been working with engineers from Moore Engineering hammering out a two-part project that will create a new well and redo a current street.

According to Rolette Mayor Blaine Scott, the entire project is costing approximately $2.2 million. John Street will be revamped with a new water and sewer line, in addition to new pavement.

Scott indicated the need for the endeavor stems from one particular well affecting the city's water supply. Engineers are expected to drill a new well and run transmission lines into the well house.

"We had a well that has given us lots of issues so we are abandoning that one and adding a new one from a different location," Scott said. "The new well should clear up a lot of problems we've been having with rust and other issues." Scott said the project will take a week to ten days and it should not affect water service.

The well project is tied in with the street project. Scott indicated the city of Rolette will be responsible for 55 percent of the cost.

The city has secured a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant that will be worth approximately $940,000.

The city will be responsible for the rest of the note. Scott said how it will be funded has not been decided, adding a public hearing will be held before anything is finalized.

"We are not 100 percent sure on the funding but we are looking at going with special assessments for everybody in the community," Scott said. "These would be assessed once a year and could be anywhere from $200 to $230 annually."

Scott said until the project goes out for bids, costs are strictly estimates.

"These figures could always go up, or even down depending on the final costs," he said.

Scott added the project will go out for bids in October and crews could begin working next summer.

"We are not 100 percent sure on the funding but we are looking at going with special assessments for everybody in the community."
