In the race for Sussex County register of wills, incumbent Cindy Green will face off against Democratic challenger Gregory Fuller Sr.

What does the register of wills do? What are the primary functions of this office?

Green: The Register of Wills Office is responsible for the efficient administration of all estates being probated in Sussex County. The register of wills grants authority to personal representatives to administer estates and is responsible for making sure that those administrations are carried out in compliance with Delaware law

Fuller: The register of wills provides oversight for the office that is responsible for probating the estates of deceased citizens of the county.

In addition, determining when an estate needs to be open for probate and ensuring that open estates are properly closed.

Why should this office be an elected position and not an appointed one?

Green: I support the register of wills being an elected position because the voters can choose who represents them. It gives accountability to the people.

Fuller: Because I believe the people should be the ones who make the determination who serves them and not any one individual.

Give three specific ways the Register of Wills Office could better serve the public.

Green: We are currently doing this by making sure all wills and estate records are kept electronically on computers, allowing easy access for residents and protecting them from fire, water and damage, and aging. Sixty years of past wills and estate records are now being electronically copied to computers. All office policies and procedures are up to current legal standards.

Fuller: First, by being proactive in making the public aware of the processes the office entails prior to the services being needed. Secondly, by implementing the electronic filing system, which the other two counties did almost two years ago. Finally, by having a policy and procedure manual for future employees and administrative personnel to follow ensuring consistency in operations.
