NEWPORT, NH — Richard "Rick" G. Velte Jr., 69, of Newport, NH, died suddenly July 23, 2015 in Plymouth, NH.

He was born in Boston, MA on Nov. 29, 1945, the son of Richard G. and Juliet (Lawrence) Velte Sr.

He spent his early years in Lexington, MA, summering with his grandmother in Meredith on Lake Waukewan for many years. His love for cooking began at a very early age when he worked at Hart' s Turkey Farm. He began as a dishwasher and worked his way up to chef. Rick attended the Culinary Institute of America and traveled to Colorado, Washington, Arizona, Philadelphia, Massachusetts and New Hampshire where he worked in management for many different establishments including Sambo's, Burger King, IHOP, Newport Creamery, Sheraton Hotels, and the Holderness Inn.

He lived in Fall River, MA before moving to Grantham, NH in 1991 and then to Newport, NH in 1997. After moving to Grantham, Rick was a car salesman for Smith Auto Sales in Lebanon and then more recently for Dartmouth Motors.

Above all, Rick loved his wife and family very much. Always ready to cook anything, Rick loved to barbecue and enjoyed having the family over for gatherings. He was a Boston sports fan watching the Patriots, Red Sox and Bruins. Rick enjoyed the holidays, particularly Halloween and Christmas. He liked his pool, horses and always looked forward to playing sol itaire on his computer.

Members of his surviving family include his wife, Brenda (Edwards) Velte of Newport, NH; two children, Heather and her husband, John-Michael Jenkins of Portsmouth, NH and Christopher and his wife, Kristen Velte of Jenner, C A; four stepchildren, Ronald and his wife, Heather Foley of Charleston, SC, Scott and his wife, Tiffany Foley of Texas, Lynne and her husband, Mark Bolduc of Easthampton, MA and Lisa Foley of Claremont, NH; seven grandchildren, Grace, Lily, Fin, Lauren, Erin, Sean and Caitlin; a brother, Lawrence Velte of Fairfax, VA; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held July 27 at the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main Street, Newport, NH with the Rev. Donna Leslie, officiating.
