Melitta Rauth-Lessing, 91, a resident of Allyn since 1976, passed away Monday, July 11 following a battle with cancer. She was born March 23, 1925 in Schwanewede, Germany to Julius Huneken and Emilie (Klmgenspor) Huneken.
She married Dr. Rudolf Lessing in April, 2002 in Lilienthal, Germany. Her previous marriage to Josef Rauth, October 1955 in Schwanewede Germany ended in divorce in 1997.
Melitta was born & raised in Germany, & after surviving the Nazi regime of WWII, emigrated to the U.S. in 1957 to start a new life with her husband and first child. She raised 6 children and several grandchildren while managing a farm, cooking, sewing, cleaning, canning, and maintaining strong German roots for her family.
Her interests included gardening, knitting, & crafting dolls were her hobbies, and up until her 91st birthday she was still knitting one pair of socks a day. She was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Bremerton and a former Port Orchard and Belfair Farmer's Market vendor. She was known throughout the community to all as "Oma."
She is survived by daughter Astrid Eiken-Roth (Alo) of Germany, Son Hans Rauth of Spokane, Son Roger Rauth (Sharla) of Poulsbo, Daughter Cornelia Rauth de Felix (Ricardo) of Mexico, Daughter Ronnie Rauth-Larson of Allyn, Daughter Melitta Holland (Scott) of Allyn, 16 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, & many others she helped "raise" throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Josef, and a daughter Garnet, in March 1967.
A memorial service will be held in Bremerton, in August, with the date and time to be determined. Inurnment will be at St. Johannes Kirche. Arrangements by the funeral home in Schwanewede, Germany.
