Event is group's primary fundraiser for the year

Members of the Pioneer Kiwanis are brewing beer, creating quilts and buying wine in preparation for the group's annual Crab and Clam Dinner and Auction.

Both silent and live auctions will take place during the event to raise money for scholarships for students in the Pioneer School District.

The event is scheduled from 4:30 to 7 p.m. March 19 at the Pioneer Elementary School cafeteria, 110 E. Spencer Lake Road.

"This is our primary fundraiser for the year," said member Dick Knutzen. "We've put it on annually for the last 20 years, at least."

Tickets are $30 for an adult, $15 for children under 10 years old.

The group will serve fresh, whole crabs from Nelson Crab Inc. for dinner, with clams from Taylor Shellfish Farms and the Nisqually tribe, and spaghetti.

Knutzen said the crabs are so big, people often bring a plastic bag to take their leftovers home.

Last year's event raised $9,000, which supplied six $500 scholarships to Pioneer Intermediate/Middle School students, and $1,000 scholarships to Pioneer High School students.

The fundraiser also supplements several additional programs for the district, such as transportation for field trips and turkeys for families during the holiday season.

"We make hardly anything on the dinner," Knutzen said. "Most of the funds come from the live and silent auction."

Auction items include five gallons of beer, homebrewed by Knutzen, a wine package, handmade quilt, Russell Wilson digitally signed football and golf packages to local courses. The auction hosts about 20 live items, and between 80 and 100 silent auction items. For more information, call Bob Helm at 427-0448, Lee Strohm at 432-0139 or Dick Knutzen at 427-0449. Tickets can be also be purchased at Spencer Lake Bar and Grill, or at the door.
