The Mountainair girls basketball team got their second win of the year (again over Temple Baptist) without leading scorer Brooke Roybal. Freshman Andrea Roberts hit for 18 points as the Mustangs beat the Temple Baptist Roadrunners 48-24 in Mountainair on Jan. 27.

Temple's Hannah Lynch, an East Mountain resident, came out wrapped in a blanket and was only able to play several minutes. Her team continued with four players, and the Lady Mustangs alternated four players at a time for much of the game although they had a full squad.

Breanna Lovato, also a Mustang freshman, said, "Even if we don't have the lead, we only play with the same number of players as the other team. Coach [Dwayne Roberts] doesn't care as much about winning or losing, just playing right."

Lovato, with six points and seven rebounds in the game, scored within seven seconds of entering the game midway through the first quarter. "It helped to come out and score right away. We become more of a team without looking for Brooke to score every time," she added.

The Mustangs came out to take a 15-2 first-quarter lead with Andrea scoring eight of her points mainly on outside jumpers. Temple's Emily Gordon got 10 points in the second quarter as the Roadrunners outscored the Mustangs, 15-11.

Mountainair senior Elena Chavez scored five of her eight points in the third period and helped with a block to hold Temple to only three. Fellow senior Shayna Padilla was hurt with two minutes left in the game, but by the time Andrea Roberts got her last points on a steal, the Lady Mustangs had doubled the Roadrunners' total.

With concern about both Padilla and Roybal, coach Roberts said, "We'll be good and Brooke will be back at the end of the week. Shayna should be all right."
