Shawna Blaisure's team-high 17 points in the Feb. 26 district championship game helped lift the Estancia girls basketball team to a 39-26 win over Bosque for the District 8-2A title.

"Practicing my shots is one of the main things I've been working on," said the 510" Blaisure.

- The Lady Bears came out strong and never trailed Bosque, leading 14-7 after the first quarter and 26-13 at the half.

"That was the plan," Estancia's Haley Coburn said. "Coach told us, 'Don't think it's going to be easy,' and we knew [the Lady Bobcats] were going to bring their game so we had to bring our game," said the senior point guard.

Coburn finished with no points. Her only basket—a high-floating 3-pointer from the top of the arc—was nullified by a traveling call. Coburn, however, had a number of defensive steals and offensive assists.

Junior Desirae Ortiz, who banked Estancia's only 3-pointer in the game, contributed 9 points for the Lady Bears. ."I thought it was a good team effort, we worked hard as a team," Ortiz said.

Estancia's offense struggled a bit in the second half scoring 7 points in the third quarter and just 6 points in the fourth.

"Oh, my gosh, that's what we do almost every time," said Coburn. "That's been our problem, especially the third quarter; it's been a problem since last year."

Blaisure, who was held scoreless in the fourth quarter, added, "We're working on a new offense that's not quite there yet."

After being down by as much as 14 points early in the third quarter, the Lady Bobcats capitalized on Estancia's cold spell going on a 6-0 run to close within 8 points.

But Estancia's defense made up for its second-half shooting woes, holding the Lady Bobcats to just 4 points in the fourth quarter. "We just got a little cold," said Ortiz, "but we warmed up when it counted."
