The Estancia Bear softball team traveled to Santa Fe's St.

Michael's tournament on Saturday as the only small school there. While their first two games were close the Bears could only win the third one to capture 7th place.

They lost 11-7 to the host team on Thursday, lost 1-0 to Raton on Friday then beat Capital 14-5 on Saturday. Aylissa Lujan got 8 strikeouts and was 4-5 from the plate with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

"Aylissa gave us a huge lift," coach Mike Calhoon said. "It was a good experience. Good bigger schools make us work; we played well all weekend."

The Bears went down 2-0 in the first inning against Capital but three hits and a walk put them up 3-2 in the bottom of the inning.

They continued to dominate the rest of the game with Lujan, Cheyenne Randall and Mercedes Crabb leading the charge with multiple hits and RBIs.

Crabb is only a freshman who said she had some help with her batting from a coach at Sandia. "He said I was sliding [my hips] too much." Crabb was able to change that so she lifts her leg instead of sliding to get more power.

Crabb said the pitching is the biggest difference from middle school to high school. She is the starting junior varsity pitcher and also plays catcher.

With an 8-5 lead going into the 6th inning the Bears got 6 more runs and the umpires called the game. Calhoon said his team left 7 runners on base the previous day that number was only 4 on Saturday.
