Mountainair boys track and field coach Kevin Reese sounded like he finished a jigsaw puzzle after his team's 10th place finish in the state 1A championship. "After three injuries in the last 48 hours, I pieced things together this morning. I'm almost overjoyed."

With a seventh place in the 4 x 100-meter relay, his team barely missed placing in all four relay events for the first time since he's been coach."I thought we could do third as a team coming in but I'm happy" with 15 points after all the injuries.

Mustang Santana Zamora got second place in the 300 hurdles and third in the 100 hurdles as well as tying for fourth in the high jump. Zamora's been having hip problems and he said, "The injury made it difficult but I feel pretty good about giving it all.We lost some seniors last year and lost a lot of time from our 1600 [state champs] last year."

Estancia's boys did not fair quite as well as their girls coming out in 8th overall. But they also got points with their relays getting a second in the 400, third in the 800 and fourth in the 1600, Lawrence Chavez got second in the triple jump and 6th in the long.

One surprise for the Bears was hurdler Eddie Guardiola, who finished second in the 300 hurdles. Guardiola tried hurdling for the first time this year and said, "I had to practice a lot to get the steps down. I learned a lot from Derek" Georgia who was unable to hurdle this year.

Guardiola tripped on the last hurdle and otherwise was in contention to win the event."I would have liked to have won but I'm happy we did everything we could."

Matt Broomfield got all 6 points for East Mountain's T-wolves who finished 19th overall. Broomfield was third in the 800 and fifth in the 1600.
