The new Estancia football turf and bleachers did not impress the top-ranked Santa Rosa Lions as they downed die Bears 56-22 in Estancia's home opener.

A wide open first quarter passing game by Estancia was eventually beaten by Santa Rosa's single-wing offense, which yielded Jason Martinez close to 300 yards on 'the ground.

"Santa Rosa didn't make any mistakes, which is big in high school football, " said Estancia head coach Dusty Giles. "We're gonna play them again [in the state playoffs]. We have to make one-on-one tackles. We can't do gang-tackling against mem."

Martinez had 84 - and 86-yard runs for touchdowns and his fellow running backs picked up heavy yardage."We didn't have an extra guy to isolate on 26 [Martinez].We need a»little more direction on where we need to be, " Giles said.

"Desmond [Padilla]was our bright spot in the game, " Giles added. Padilla caught several passes on offense and made more

tackles than Giles said he would have liked to see for a player in die defensive secondary. "He hadn't played organized football in a few years."

Santa Rosa struck first in the opening quarter but the Bears rebounded quickly after a 60-yard Destry Oberg pass to Lawrence Chavez. Oberg snuck in from the 2-yard line to tie the game at 6-6.

The Lions came right back to score again, but Oberg threw to Troy Mitchell in the corner of the end zone to knot the game at 14.

It was almost all Santa Rosa after that, but the Bears did manage to score again in the third quarter as Oberg threw a 31-yard slant to Mitchell across the middle.

"Santa Rosa was getting into our heads, " said Bear junior Juan Dominguez.

The Wide receiver had several catches and also returned punts i and kicks in a breakout game. "It i was a real adrenalin rush; you ■ hear the crowd and just go numb. Still, getting a win would have been nice."
