The Clearwater County Sheriff's Office wants to remind the public to be very careful about giving personal information or credit card information over the phone to would be thieves. Numerous reports are made every year regarding phone scams.

The latest reports that the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office has received involve the caller telling the victim that a loved one is in jail. They then ask them to go to Wal-Mart or Walgreens and put money on a "Money Pak" card. The potential victim is then instructed to call the thieves back and give them the card information so that their loved one can get bailed out of jail. The money on the card is now as good as stolen as the caller has all the information they need to access the funds.

Please be aware of any calls you receive that either are offering something that seems too good to be true or are telling you a loved one needs help and want you to send money. If you receive calls such as this, you can either call the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office or go online and report it to the Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.ftc.gov.
