More adventures in winter driving

"I like winter, I like snow, I like icy winds that blow..." Whoa! Wait a minute here! This is the first line of a cute little book I had as a kid. "I like icy winds that blow"? I can get behind the liking winter and snow, especially if you ski, but that 'icy wind' thing is weird! To further my adventures on Highway 95, maybe the next line should be "I like icy roads that pull you off the road!"

Not so many animals on the goat trail lately - last one was a badger; boy did he scurry off quickly when he saw me coming!

Back to the point - winter driving. Just when we are lulled into thinking we will have an early spring, wham-o icy, spitting snow. This is the wet kind of snow that puts a combination of snow, slush and ice on the road often adding a little fog to the mix, just to keep you on your toes. I've got my vehicle pretty well set up for this kind of driving, as I'm sure most of us living in the mountains do. The works- studded snow tires, front wheel or four wheel drive, new wiper blades, etc.

This time of year seems to be the trickiest for driving. I've had my share of close calls between Council and Tamarack, and I'm sure many of you have similar stories. So, drive carefully up Idaho's infamous goat trail; you never know what will be around the next corner - like a big semi!

Editor's note: Recent snowstorms have hit Riggins and areas north, but missed Council and Meadows Valley. It has melted off at Riggins, but as of Tuesday, there were reports of fresh snow on the ground from Lucille north.
