Former Kenly Police Chief David Mangum was arrested last week by the Johnston Sheriff's Office and charged with six sex crimes

Mangum, 44, of 8711 Flower Hill Road, Middlesex, is facing three counts of indecent liberties with a child, two counts first-degree sex offense and sex offense by parental role according to JC Sheriff's office reports.

According to investigators, the charges are alleged three years ago with a 13 year old.

His bond was set at $360,000 and remains that amount after his first appearance on Monday.

Mangum joined the Kenly Police Department in May 2000 and served as chief for approximately five years.

Following an investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation he was fired in 2007 and charged with embezzlement for using a town credit card for personal expenses.

Mangum is alleged to have used the card to buy tickets for a cruise and personal shopping trips.

He apparently pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor embezzlement charges in September 2007 and was given a suspended sentence and one-year probation under a plea arrangement.

Mangum made his first court appearance on Monday.
