The Washington County Hospital and Clinic's (WCHC) new clinic in Kalona is a continuation of the hospitals' strategic planning to serve all the communities in the county, says Brett Antczak, Chief Clinic Officer. Kalona is the first clinic site outside Washington for the hospital. The other four are Family, Medical, Women's and Specialty clinics.

What made it easier for creating a Kalona clinic, says Antczak, is that they found the perfect health care provider for the new site Claire Harapat, a Kalona resident and family nurse practitioner specializing in family medicine.

Harapat has more than 20 years of experience in the medical field, including nursing positions in an Intermediate Pulmonary Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Most recently, she received her Master of Science in nursing and a postgraduate certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Graceland University with honors. She is also a member of the Kalona First Responders.

Harapat and her family have been a part of the Kalona community for over 10 years. Claire married Mike in 1994 and they have three children — Allison, 19, currently attending La James Cosmetology College; and 16-year-old twins, Ryan and Rachel, who are currently juniors at Mid Prairie High School.

The Kalona clinic will be open for all ages and provide physicals, well-baby checkups, immunizations and taking blood samples that will be sent to WCHC for testing. Harapat said she would be treating "bumps and bruises," but for more serious traumas, patients should go straight to an emergency room.

Antczak said the local clinic will allow patients to be seen very quickly. A new computer system will enable patients to log in and view their records, including children's immunization records.

WCHC took a couple months to redesign the former dentist office at the Bull Town Plaza. The clinic's interior was designed to reflect the community and includes wainscoting, sliding doors that resemble those on a barn, a quilt made by Harapat's mother-in-law and even a hitching post in the back for the Amish community.
