The Fleming Lady Wildcats competed at the State Basketball tournament this past weekend in Greeley and although they came up short of the big gold ball, they have so much to be proud of.

This year's team not only defeated the highly ranked Merino Lady Rams to win the District Tournament but they also won the Regional contest with Hi-Plains in overtime to make the Great Eight at The University of Northern Colorado.

And the ride at State was just as sweet. The Lady Cats battled with McClave in Thursday's match up, taking a two-point victory to advance to play on Friday. The contest against Kim on Friday was just as close as it came down to one point in the final seconds, giving Fleming a spot in the Championship game against the undefeated Simla Cubs on Saturday night.

To say the Lady Cats gave it their all would be an understatement. Fleming stayed in the game to the end and even with just seconds left on the clock, battled for points in an attempt to tie it. As the buzzer sounded the Wildcats found themselves down by three and earning second place but I'm sure they are still number one the hearts of their fans that made the trip to UNC to cheer them on and those who followed from home.

There were tears and the loss hurt, no doubt. But earning second place is an honor all in it's own. An anonymous author once said, "It is not how big you are, it's how big you play." Lady Cats, you played big! You didn't give up and gave your fans a terrific show. Hold your heads high.

Not only have you shown true grace on the court Lady Wildcats, but your display of sportsmanship has no doubt made your entire community proud this season. You have set the bar high and given younger generations something to look up to.

Hold your second place trophy with pride, you're one of only five teams to bring one home this season and you earned every bit of yours.
