A California Highway Patrolman took a Reno man into custody after a high speed chase that began near Eskimo Hill on Highway 44 and ended in Uptown Susanville on Sunday, Oct. 25.

Cody L. Khan, 28, of Reno, was arrested without incident late Sunday evening after he abandoned his car one block off of Main Street in Susanville near the intersection of Nevada and North Roop streets.

Khan is charged with felony reckless driving, evading an officer and driving on a suspended license.

The incident began about 9:46 p.m. when a CHP officer from Burney attempted to stop a white Mitsubishi car for speeding on Highway 44. As the officer activated the emergency lights, the vehicle accelerated away. The officer followed the vehicle for several miles, but then lost sight of it when the driver turned off his lights.

A second CHP officer encountered the vehicle on Highway 44 near McCoy Road about 10:04 p.m. The vehicle was traveling approximately 117 miles per hour when it passed the officer, according to a press release from the CHP. The driver again turned off the lights as the officer pursued the vehicle.

Then about 10:12 p.m., a Susanville CHP officer successfully spiked the vehicle's tires near the intersection of Highway 44 and Highway 36.

The Mitsubishi continued toward Susanville on Highway 36 at a high rate of speed, but it caught on fire as it came into the city limits of Susanville.

The driver stopped the vehicle and fled, but he was arrested after the CHP officer located him.

The Lassen County Sheriff's Office, the Susanville Police Department and the Susanville Fire Department assisted the CHP.
